Remember that children have short attention spans and the long, leisurely process of a barbecue can seem incredibly boring to them. Make sure you've planned some distractions to keep them happy while you and your adult guests lounge around enjoying the savoury smells emanating from your barbecue.
- Clothes - mothers have this terrible habit of dressing their children nicely. Why do they do it? No child can have fun in clothes they can't get dirty. Don't despair, head for your local charity shop and buy a bunch of big old t-shirts. Issue one to each child on arrival to go over their 'good' clothes, then they can get as mucky as they like and when the fun is over, off comes the t-shirt and the dirt in one.
- Games - now give them something to get dirty with! Kids love clay, pots of bubbles, finger painting and so on, so set them up in the garden with some big sheets of paper, poster paint, bubbles, chalk, and modelling material and let them devise their own creative enterprises.
- As evening comes on, give each child a couple of glow sticks - the bendable kind - that can be made into a headband, necklace or bracelet. This way you can spot them as they move around in the dark.
- Cooking - let them help with the dessert. Buy a couple of packets of marshmallows and a packet of mini mars bars or similar - cut the mars bars in half and help them thread the marshmallows and chocolate alternately onto skewers - they will enjoy the process and love the outcome! Remember that marshmallows puff up and get very hot, and children will need to be supervised when cooking them. Equally, set the skewers aside for four or five minutes after they are cooked so that they are not burning hot when they reach the little mouths.
