Barbecue - Disposable

What is a disposable barbecue? Basically, it's a tinfoil tray packed with barbecue coals and covered with a thin metal rack on which to lay your food.

Advantages

They are cheap, easy to light and weigh very little, making them easier to carry. They're also good for keeping vegetarian food separate if you have fussy people attending a barbecue.

Disadvantages

Sadly they don't burn for very long and the rack is close to the coals so they're only good for thin foods such as burgers.

Safety

The most common form of accident with disposable barbecue is that of people treading, falling or leaning on them and getting extremely serious burns. DO NOT barbecue on the ground, as your dog or child are at risk if you do. DO NOT leave your barbecue unattended and NEVER leave hot coals on the ground for somebody else to step in or fall over. When you've finished, pick up your barbecue, using gloves and either dispose of it sensibly, or pour sand over it to ensure it is fully extinguished. NEVER pour water on a barbecue, even if it seems to be out - all you will do is boil your face in the steam that pours of the coals.

Simple recipes for disposable barbecues:

Salami - heat the barbecue and add salami slices which will soon become crisp and crunchy.

Easy bananas - prick the banana all over with a fork and leave to stand in a mixture of rum and orange juice. After half an hour or so, place on the barbecue and leave until slightly brown, very tasty.

Fruit Kebabs - any seasonal fruit that doesn't brown makes a good kebab. Ensure you have honey to brush them with afterwards.

Any vegetable that can be eaten raw is a good disposable barbecue choice, as it doesn't matter if it's a little undercooked, so choose things like mushrooms, tomatoes peppers and courgettes which can be brushed with olive oil and sprinkled with mixed herbs and rock salt before cooking.
